The Seelinger Arts Foundation is proud to support Po Leung Kuk, one of the first charitable organizations founded in Hong Kong. Since its creation in 1878, Po Leung Kuk has played a crucial role in protecting vulnerable women and children, while expanding its scope to meet the growing needs of the Hong Kong community.
A history of protection and support
Founded during a time when the abduction and trafficking of women and children were widespread crimes in Hong Kong, Po Leung Kuk—literally translating to « protection of the young and innocent »—was born out of a citizen mobilization. On November 8, 1878, a group of local Chinese citizens petitioned Governor Sir John Pope Hennessy to create this organization dedicated to protecting the victims of these heinous crimes.
In May 1880, the organization was officially recognized under the name Society for the Protection of Women and Children. Since then, it has worked to prevent kidnappings, protect women and children in distress, and served as a mediator in family and marriage disputes under British authority.

Today, the organization has become a key player in social, educational, medical, cultural, and recreational services.
